Vacancy Head of Operating Department

Reporting to the General Manager, the job holder will be based in Minehead, Somerset, and will have responsibility for the strategic management of the Department which includes ensuring that trains ands associated services are planned and run to the legal standards of safety and effciency and in accordance with the timetable. They will also be responsible for the operational workforce, ensuring that adequate staff are rostered and available to run the train services. Key functions will be contacts with legislative bodies and other heritage railways to ensure that the WSR is legally compliant and follows best practice, contact with other heads of other Departments within the railway to ensure the smooth operational activities, and the development of staff through regular performance reviews. The job holder will be expected to have experience of working within the rail industry, either main line or heritage or a mixture of both, and to have experience of managing teams,with a proven ability to provide leadership and strategic direction to staff. The function also has budgetary responsibilities and includes the line management of both paid and volunteer staff as well as the signalling and guards inspectorates.
