Watchet Explorer from Minehead Blue and Red timetable days

Travel from Minehead to Watchet on either the 12:00 or 12:10 service (depending on which date you select) behind a heritage steam locomotive on select days, with time to explore the town, its marina, shops and cafes.

If purchasing tickets on a red timetable day your excursion is as follows: Service to leave Minehead at 12.00 service arrive in Watchet at 12:33  where you will be permitted to leave the service and explore, your return service will depart Watchet Station at 15:43 and will arrive back in Minehead at 16:16.

If purchasing tickets on a blue timetable day your excursion is as follows: Service to leave Minehead at 12.10 service arrive in Watchet at 12:42  where you will be permitted to leave the service and explore for one hour, your return service will depart Watchet Station at 13:45 and will arrive back in Minehead at 14:15.

Watchet is the central point of the West Somerset Railway and is the perfect location to visit for all the family, including the dog! Its friendly and welcoming atmosphere from the station staff to the local business owners has been a key attraction for many decades. Like us, the town is raring to go following the closures of businesses during lockdown.

The harbour town has an abundance of character and a deep set connection to its history. Explore the high street, which has so much to offer by way of Museums, Shops, Cafes and the working Marina and Lighthouse. Fantastic views form the backdrop for lunch across the channel towards Wales (on a clear day) and the exciting East Quay development is beginning to take shape ready for opening in July. Watchet's unique charm was the inspiration behind the poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge ‘The Ancient Mariner’ and it's easy to see why. With so much to see and do, you will have a truly wonderful day out.

Things to see and do:

For Children:

Dragon Trail!

Watchet is home to some very magnificent and intelligent Dragons. These dragons are inquisitive creatures, they love to explore and venture into Watchet town to visit some of their friends. They often go out to play all day and this can be troublesome for Mummy Dragon.

Like all Mums she likes to know where her babies are at all times, so we need your help! 5 Dragons have wondered off into Watchet and set up home in some of the shops, do you have what it takes to find them and report back to their mum to let her know where they are and what they are doing?

Collect a map from Watchet Station building once you get off the train, if you find them all, a small prize will be issued as a reward.

Explore the shop at Watchet where we have a variety of dragons for sale which you can buy and keep as a memento of the day. We also have a range of pocket money toys and games.

Luna’s Circular walk.

At Watchet, a short walk guide can be collected from the station to take you on a mystery tour. On this walk, you will find a beautiful play park which gives fantastic views across the sea, especially from the top of the slide! The park also houses an outdoor gym for the adults too! After having a short break at the playground, continue following the pictures of Luca to get some spectacular views of Watchet, Wales and the railway line (from a safe distance). This walk does have a few inclines, however it is perfect for families.

Statue Hunting:

On the Esplanade there is a statue of Yankee Jack, sitting and looking out to see. Locals love to see selfies with Jack on social media, use the hashtags #yankeejack and #lovewatchet on your visit!

For the Heritage Hunters:

Our friends at Watchet station have worked hard to retain the heritage nature of the station building. Within the Booking office you will find an original GWR rail network map dating from 1937 to admire. We also have the original Edmondson ticket rack in full view complete with a display of Edmondson style tickets which show how tickets were sold before changes to the system in the 1980s. Interestingly this style of ticket was used by the Wet Somerset Railway across the board up until the last few years, where online tickets started to increase and unfortunately our Edmondson ticket supplies dwindled. We had to adapt and now carry more modern, cost-effective approach to ticketing.

Explore the lamp room, which has been lovingly restored to represent a standard goods office which would have been used in the 1940s. A lot of the ore modern fittings within this room have been replaced with heritage items to give a more realistic feel to the room.

Get to know Watchet and its history by visiting the Pagoda Waiting room, where our volunteers have lovingly created a display relating to the history of Watchet and the development of the railway.

Did you know Watchet has a beach? Its tucked away in the heart of Watchet and is the perfect place for fossil hunting, or exploring the rock pools for wildlife.

Further information on Watchet can be found on our Watchet Station page which can be found here https://www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk/railway/stations/watchet
