Tourism is thriving at the West Somerset Railway.

The UK’s premier heritage railway has once again seen an increase in passenger numbers at nearly 2% compared with 2017.
“It’s been a very busy summer so far and it is thanks to our team, most of whom give up their time freely as volunteers,” Paul Conibeare, General Manager commented. “Two of our Wednesdays in August broke records, with visitors in excess of 1,600”.
With over 20 miles of scenery and 10 lovingly kept stations along the line, the West Somerset Railway continues to draw the crowds. 
There are 10 stations that are destinations in their own right. Many visitors are drawn to a day out at Minehead Bay, but there are also opportunities to travel to Dunster Castle, Cleve Abbey at Washford, Doniford Farm Park and the wonderful coastal town of Watchet.
Looking ahead, the railway has a busy diary of events for September with children’s character Gruffalo visiting Minehead on September 8th, a 1940s weekend on the 15th and 16th, and for the enthusiast, the Autumn Steam Gala from the 27th to the 30th, with opportunities to ride behind locomotives visiting from other heritage railways.
One success story has been the West Somerset Railway Annual Pass, launched at the end of June with over 200 sold to-date. “It’s great to be able to welcome customers back on to our steam trains – especially local residents and those looking for a regular day out.” Paul Conibeare commented. “Already, we are planning for a busy December with festive tickets, already on sale at www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk.
