It is disappointing to report that a number of rail vehicles have been damaged in the sidings at Minehead station. On the late afternoon of Sunday 26th February, a small number of individuals entered railway property and damaged a number of vehicles, including the railway’s operating Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU). Following a report by a nearby resident to police, police apprehended and detained three individuals.
There was various damage to the DMU including broken windows and interior damage. A number of freight wagons had locks broken, and coaches had doors damaged.
The DMU had been prepared for operation at the start of the WSR operating season at the end of March. Following a detailed examination of the damage, it seems that it should be possible to repair the Unit for the start of the season.
General Manager, Kerry Noble said: “We are very grateful to the nearby resident who reported this activity, and to the police for responding rapidly and taking the appropriate action. Nevertheless, this is a very disappointing incident, following work that staff and volunteers have undertaken over the winter. We will all be working hard to ensure these vehicles can be back in use again as soon as possible.”
