The Bronze stage course is carried out over two days and has theoretical and practical elements. Numbers are limited to a maximum of six participants to ensure you get the full experience from your course.
Day 1 - has talks and demonstrations on safety, making steam and boiler management, locomotive operation and signalling theory, meaning you have the the best possible information for day 2. The day also includes visits to the signal box, locomotive sheds and workshops.
Day 2 - starts at 07:00 to prepare the locomotive for the day's work including oiling and lighting the fire. Watch as the steam that you've created brings the loco to life. The climax of the day's proceedings is three round trips from Minehead to Blue Anchor hauling an empty passenger train.
You will have one trip firing and the other driving and spend the other trips in the coaches learning about the other end of the business with the Guard. The day ends with disposal of the locomotive and certificate presentation for completing the course successfully.
You must be 18 years+ to take part in the Steam Engineman Courses.
This two day course includes lunch and refreshments on both days and course notes including detailed diagrams.
Once you have completed the bronze course, you are then able to undertake the rest of our Steam Engineman Courses, where your knowledge from the bronze course is essential before a silver stage then gold stage.

Further Information about your day
Your first day (first day date indicated on your ticket) will start at 9.30am at Minehead in the Steam Engineman Classroom and will include:
- Safety and Signalling
- Visits to the Signalbox
- Lunch included
- Learning how a Steam Locomotive works
- Visit and Tour of Loco Shed
Day two start 7.30am at Minehead your day will include:
- Raising Steam and Safety Checks
- Lubrication, Cleaning, coaling, watering
- Driving in practise
- Approaching a train and coupling
- Three round trips Minehead to Blue Anchor. You will drive one day and fire the other.
- Disposal of locomotive
- Lunch Included
Please note only course participants may travel on the train.
When Steam Engineman Courses are held, the railway does not operate a public service, therefore buffets and shops may be closed to the public. Friends of participants are, however welcome to visit station areas to take photographs.
Please ensure you bring with you:
- Enriched cotton overalls (not polyester as it melts) or clothes you don't mind being marked.
- Layers of clothing will help you keep warm or cool as required.
- An old coat would be useful if rain and/or wind is forecast.
- Strong boots or shoes - preferably safety boots with steel toecaps.
- Camera to record the day and take a group photograph (if you wish)
- A visibility vest will be provided.

ONLINE BOOKING
Once purchased on-line, tickets may not be used in conjunction with any other offer.
No ticket may be resold.
We reserve the right to refuse entry to late arrivals.
TICKET TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- This ticket is issued subject to the Rules and Regulations of the West Somerset Railway PLC. Full details are available on request.
- The West Somerset Railway reserve the right to cancel a Steam Engineman Course if the minimum number of bookings per experience is not reached.
- Please check your tickets as mistakes cannot be rectified.
- It is the responsibility of the ticket holder to ascertain whether a service has been cancelled and the date and time of any rearranged service (this includes Diesel substitutions). If a service is cancelled or rescheduled, we will use reasonable endeavours to notify ticket holders of the cancellation once we have received the relevant authorisation from the West Somerset Railway PLC. Please note that we cannot guarantee that ticket holders will be informed of such cancellation before the date of travel. Notices of changes to services will appear on our website as soon as possible and will also be notified on social media.
- The management reserves the right to refuse admission should patrons breach any Rules and Regulations of the West Somerset Railway PLC. The management may on occasions have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.
- A £5 administration fee per booking will be charged for any subsequent booking alteration. No refunds will be given once tickets are issued. The Management cannot be held responsible for any tickets which are lost or stolen. West Somerset Railway PLC reserves the right to cancel ticket bookings which it reasonably suspects to have been made fraudulently.
- The West Somerset Railway PLC operates a No Smoking policy this includes e-cigarettes.
- The unauthorized use of photographic and recording equipment for public use is prohibited.
- The West Somerset Railway PLC accepts no responsibility for any personal property.
- Ticket holders consent to filming and sound recording as visitors.
- If a service is rescheduled, ticket holders will be offered tickets to the rescheduled service, equivalent to the face value of the ticket. If a service is cancelled, ticket holders will be offered travel on an alternative service (subject to availability) up to the value on the ticket.
- Purchase of a ticket does not guarantee a seat unless otherwise stated.
- All of these terms and conditions are governed by English Law.
- The ticket holder must comply with all relevant statutes, safety announcements and West Somerset Railway PLC regulations whilst visiting the railway.
- Breach of any of these conditions or any unacceptable behaviour likely to cause damage, nuisance or injury shall enable the railway to refuse to carry you as a passenger.
- Tickets may be restricted to a maximum number per person. We reserve the right to cancel tickets purchased in excess of this number
